Extensive road settlements incur exhaustive topographical, infrastructure, and geotechnical investigations before the completion of design repairs.
Brookwood Drive has been experiencing significant settlement since it’s construction in 2005, concentrated over areas where trenches for underground utilities were buried as deep as 6 meters. With settlements as great as 300mm still occurring, the City of Brandon required an investigation and remediation plan take place in order to permit the utilities to be transferred to City ownership.
Capitalizing on previous surveys conducted of the area, BMCE completed a detailed topographical survey using intervals of 0.3 meters to compare to previous data and model settled areas. Geotechnical investigations confirmed primary settlement had concluded and secondary settlement may still occur in magnitudes of <0.025 meters; acceptable for repair. Utilities were extensively investigated and measured for any impact of settlement. One wastewater sewer manhole’s base had settled 0.25 meters, deforming the sewer pipe. Repairs were completed to reestablish full flow. Settled sections of roadway were milled and repaved to establish design grade.
BMCE provided resident engineering services to oversee the milling and repaving completed in 2021. Road grades were reestablished on site on a case-by-case and location basis to account for existing gutter elevations, residential driveways, and existing manhole and catch basin structures. Collaborative cooperation with the contractor to determine new asphalt thickness contributed to the aesthetic look and feel of the repaired road sections.
