Detailed structural condition assessment and restoration design for Warren Truss timber buildings across Manitoba.
Warren truss style timber buildings were constructed all across Canada in the 1940s and 1950s to support the rapid growth and need of the Canadian forces. These buildings were originally intended to be temporary structures during the war effort however a vast number of the buildings still remain and are in use as equipment and aircraft storage buildings, assembly buildings such as gyms and rinks, industrial buildings, and more.
BMCE has completed the detailed structural condition assessment and restoration design for these buildings at Canadian Forces bases 17 Wing and Shilo MB, along with various other private and municipally owned facilities across Manitoba. Some of these projects included design constraints to bring the structural capacity of the building in accordance with the current requirements of the National Building Code of Canada.
Our detailed design approach included using appropriate load resistance factors and loading conditions, using guidance of the National Building Code of Canada Commentaries for application of the code to existing buildings. Innovative design approaches included post-tensioning systems, epoxy injection and epoxy strengthening of connections, while also using traditional construction methods appropriate to the building, including split rings and shear plate connectors to repair and upgrade the buildings.
