Existing lagoon requires significant size increase to account for the expanding Hutterite Colony and wastewater from a newly constructed abbatoir.
An undersized lagoon receiving wastewaer from the colony residences had been operating as an unregistered facility since its conception. Manitoba Conservation and Climate contacted the colony to bring the lagoon into compliance with provincial guidelines, and as such required that the facility undergo the licensing process.
BMCE completed an assessment and hydraulic loading analysis of the existing facility, geotechnical investigations of soil conditions, lagoon expansion and remediation design, and submission of an Environmental Act Proposal. In addition to regular residential loading, wastewater generation from an abattoir processing cattle, hogs, and chickens had to be considered. The location of the new lagoon proved problematic as there was limited available space on land owned by the colony. Final placement required the Municipality to close a portion of the road allowance as well as overlap the existing secondary cell, increasing the need for carefully laid construction planning.
Manitoba Conservation and Climate approved the design of a new HDPE lined wastewater lagoon for the colony. A construction plan was determined to build the new secondary cell, redirect wastewater to the new secondary cell, decommission the existing lagoon and stockpile sludge for future disposal, and construct the new primary cell. BMCE completed inspections and final approvals for the new lagoon. This project remains on-going and will address the decommissioning of the old lagoon and bio-solids application process next.
